@rosch I'm going to take a guess since I know some people who do tooling on saddles, which is still kinda different - for untreated leather, you get it wet and then you can stamp it in with a metal stamp and a hammer to get the imprint - usually outlining it with a needle. I'm pretty sure you could get some kits from Tandy Leather, though you have to make sure you get good leather to use the kits with, because the leather they sell in craft stores through Tandy is crap.
