@Dash - This icon is beautiful! But the background is way too overkill (obviously irrelevant as you're just doing the icon, but I would have used a millitaryish background for a bit of diversity. But once again, nice lighting, texture, etc!
@Matej Latin The simplicity of the background is what makes the eagle stand out. If the background was just as detailed as the eagle, nothing would stand out and the icon would lose its focus. His first one had even less detail than this one, maybe I'm reading your comment wrong. :-P
Yeah, the only thing I wish this icon had was the cloth like material as the inner background inside the icon instead of the ornate metal pattern that is there in this one, the eagle would surface more clearly. I'm sure either A) Dash tried it and/or B) The client preferred this one.
The overall background just doesn't matter though, that is just flavor for Dribbble presentation.
omg, this is beautiful!!! @TylerBalaban I think the background makes sense. The square icon would perhaps be a central metal-emblem taken out of a delicate larger work (the background).
This is absolutely jaw-dropping and drop dead stunning. I would LOVE to see a time-cap video of one of your metallic works someday, if you're willing to share that is :)
Cool!, the 3d eagle dosn't match good with the photo backgrounds though, to sharp and different lighting, and the eagle dosn't have enough contrast towards the background, especially on the left side, the foot dissapears. I would remove the photo parts and make the background alot darker and less detailed, right now the background is better then the eagle.
@Mikael Eidenberg That makes sense, at first I thought you were talking about the background (behind the icon). Thanks for the great feedback as usual!

I preferred the first version, without the backround... the level of details doesn't match.. the eagle is super detailed while the bg isn't...

I simply prefer the first one where the eagle really stands out as a very detailed peace of work.. this bg somehow ruins it.. my opinion.
This is the one I'm talking about:

This is definitely one of the most impressive things I've seen on Dribbble thus far. Excellent!

I just had to see what this would look like on my home screen, minus all the preview fluff. Surprisingly, it's just as beautiful; http://cl.ly/LBZj
