In the middle of design for Webcamp 2011: A nerdy mannish trek in the Glacier National Park, Montana. Would TOTALLY love feedback as this is a personal project :)
The idea here is to go for a simple mark that can be made into patches for our fellow nerdy mannish men to sew on their prada handbags or iPad cases. I'd like for the mark to convey: web nerd/mountain man.
I went swimming in Glacier National Park once... by falling out of our raft on the Middle Fork of the Flathead river. It's kind of funny to think about a 150 pound river guide trying to pull me back into the raft. :)
Maybe I'll keep my beard growing and wear lots of flannel.
@Patrick oh my gosh. Really, I think the biggest thing I need to fix is the very asian looking influences that Kyle pointed out. I really didn't think about the round glasses + eyes + mustache causing that effect.
@Rogie We came to a place that he swore "had water yesterday" and got stuck on a rock. I flopped over the side into a pool of calm water, my wife reached for me and accidentally smacked our friend in the head with her paddle. Comedy of errors.
I don't now about the Santa meets Waldo. More like Zissou meets Zeldman. :)
@Dave + @Rogie: I see Zissou meets Zeldman too! Dude, this thing is kind of genius if you think about it. Everyone see's their own figure. That's true art!!
Loving the direction, Reginald. I think the Asian influence is primarily from the squinty eyes. I agree with a bit more weight in the lines. The things that subtly hint at [web] nerd are the glasses and the beanie (Blue Beanie Day!).
But maybe the "everyman" web nerd isn't enough to convey webby nerdscursion? He needs the tools I know you're working on. :)
Oh, and I like camp on the left because my eye starts at 12 'o clock and reads round, ending with "camp".
Looks more sailor/waldo to me. Like he just got off the Belafonte. Feels very thin to me too. I don't think he looks unhappy, but I can see where his stache being 2 arches could be misleading to that.
@mediahack I could just scrap the hat...however, it does have some mountain man/blue beanie day implications that are both nerd, webby and outdoorsmannish.

It feel's... lacking. Also everything is really thin. Other than that it looks good! That dude is cool!

I like it. The dude looks very Japanese-esque.

Some line thickness contrast would make it have some visual hierarchy - i'd try that

@Kyle Steed perhaps thats the circular glasses. Maybe I'll go with rounded rectangular?

I like this. Although the dude looks like if Santa Claus and Where's Waldo somehow banged and had a baby. Maybe that's not such a bad thing. :)

I might put "camp" on top and either "raft" or "play" in its place. Seems a bit off balance right now, I think.

@Yaron yeah, I had a feeling somebody might suggest happier. I think squared off glasses and happier might do him a bit of good.

@Sean I'm wondering if/how I can incorporate those into the logo? Or if perhaps those are better as separate merit badges, yknow?

As everyone else seems to have covered the lines/eyes, I'll note that 2011 should probably be in cap-height numerals
