It took me very long to get the colour of this layer right. It's actually inspired by the background of Paper and the album art of this CD by Jack Johnson. It reminds me a bit of a washed jean, a texture that was used for the first version of Instagram. Because the elements on this layer are very minimalistic, it doesn't get cluttered.

The colors are beautiful! Definitely fits Instagram nicely.

Have you tried removing the alternating background colors? They're normally used in tables to help guide your eyes when reading multiple columns of data. Since that's not the case here I don't think they're needed here.

@Hanno ten Hoor Not needed indeed, and it only works confusing I see now. I thought it gives it a nice visual touch (like in the Music app pre iOS 7).
To be honest I'm not a big fan of this design today.
