I think you are on to a good thing here. Once you settle on a colour you are not too far off the finished logo in my opinion.
If it was me I would experiment with a darker colour on the right side to add to the 3d look of the logo and see how that looks. Might look rubbish though :S
Are you are adding any text to it? If so, have you decided on a font?
I like this, but something about the angle feels wonky (maybe it's not angled enough; or doesn't have enough forced dimension?) Perhaps make it s solid solid with the "s" parts more reversed out.
Would you consider making the mark a solid, then reversing out the negative spaces to create the two S's? (similar to what's happening on the black background reverse test).
Really liking the direction here. Possible to make one side a darker shade of orange? Sort of give it a light source effect. Also, wondering about the line weight, could be heavier in the middle and taper down some from there. That would help improve the two point perspective.
@Jason - It should look like "SS" (a la Strongspace). My Defcon 5 comment was just a joke. :)
@Rodger - Interesting idea of making one side slightly darker. I haven't really started exploring color options. No text yet. This will evolve into an icon as well.
From your description, the mark needs to feel FORMIDABLE! Like the gates of Mordor or a TSA checkpoint at the airport. What about making it look like you are a tiny ass ant and you are looking up, like it's 50 feet tall? Just a thought.
The castle concept was the favorite and the most popular piece of feedback was that it needed to look beefier/stronger. So I beefed up the shape, gave it a slight perspective angle, and reduced the battlements at the top so they're more stubby. I also ended up making it look like each piece is interlocked with the other. This came about after first reversing the mark so it was solid with white cutouts. Lastly I added a border around it to make it also look like a "shield". Again, colors are simply placeholder for now.

This is the first logo concept for a product called Strongspace, a safe & secure "Defcon 5 level" storage service for your data.
The inspiration for this logo references a "rook" or "castle tower" to symbolize strength and security.
This is in the early stages, so I'd love your feedback. Colors are purely placeholder for now.

I want to see thicker lines.
And, I want to be as talented as you.

Definitely drawn toward this one more. The castle metaphor really ties in the "strong" feeling.

I prefer this one to the second concept. I like the castle idea, and I think you could take in a a few different directions.

Agreed with Aaron—I want this thing to feel DENSE.

I like this idea over the two S's idea. It's relevant and executed well. I think the S's idea is too abstract, in my opinion.

Like this way better than the other.
But it looks like "SS" instead of "55."
Also consider using just 1 "5" and making one side just flat.

I think that this logo has more potential. A few tweaks and maybe a couple of different directions/options with this theme and you will have a winner.

@Aaron - Agreed, thicker lines would be BOSS!! Also, you flatter me too much, but it did earn you a beer on me. SXSW 2011?
@Rogie - Thanks bro!
@Seth - Agreed.
@Joshua - Yep, making it more dense is definitely something I'm going to explore.
@Meredith - Thanks!

alright, i'll be the contrarian.
this one feels too playful, like a logo for bob the builder's sidekick.
it might work better with the letters buffed up, and the castle ridges simplified and parred down.
but i do like the other one much better. it felt much more elegant and eye catching. a little 50's ice cream man, but i liked it.

Alright so just putting it out there, as a Jew, SS is never a good thing to see. That said, this looks great Phil!

I love it. Could one side use a shadow? Would that take away the "SS" feel?
