Super cool idea. I could see having the characters being very faint upon arrival and simply getting more bold on the hover state. That's if your looking for more of a visual clue to lead users into the functionality. Otherwise, you could use top and bottom padding to provide the appropriate spacing instead of margin. That way as soon as your point your cursor between the two lines you'll get a reaction instead of having to hunt for the exact line the text is on because you've grown the selectable area. Just a thought though. Very cool!
