Turtle Stone

Those of you who are Dragon Ball fans will/might remember this one. My favourite part of Dragon Ball is the Tournament saga.

During Goku and Krillin's training Master Roshi writes his mark on a stone, throws it off a cliff and tells them to find it. The person who finds it and brings it back first will get dinner, but if it's not found within 30 minutes, neither will get dinner. From the manga.

This isn't finished, I might add more textures, or dirt etc. The shape doesn't feel quite right either. Feedback is appreciated.

I like the lighting you've got going on.

I'd try making the Roshi symbol a little less perfect. And Yeah, definitely rough up the stone a bit more. Maybe some discolouration spots.

Yeah, @Jake Moore is right, your stone is missing so rough textures and scratches on it while the symbol doesn't look embossed really

@Jake Moore @Ilie Ciorba Yep, I'm roughing it up a bit more, but I'm not going for a completely realistic look on these icons so I'm going to try and find the right balance. The symbol was written on with a pen, so it wouldn't be embossed. I gotta rough it up, I think that'll coincide with the texture.

I don't know anything about Dragon Ball... but this series is interesting. I'd just work more around the kanji, it looks quite flat now. Maybe more "carved" and subtle texture.

@Claudio Gomboli thank you :) you should check it out! it's a really fun series. Whether you watch the anime or read the manga, dragon ball is balanced with humour, action and adventure.

Regarding the kanji, I really wanted to do that. In the story (if you look at the panel I link to from the manga) he writes on the stone with a pen, so I avoided trying to engrave it into the stone. I might make it a bit glossier, to really show that it's been written on. I even drew on some rocks with a big marker to see what it might look like, and it varied on the surface of the rock, some being really glossy some being quite matte.

@Prekesh Chavda Oh that's interesting! Thanks for explain, I saw many carved kanji on stones here in Japan, so I took for granted that also this one was something like that :)
In this case, yes probably a little bit glossy would help, but as you said there's also a matte rendering when writing on stones. So maybe just some reflection, I mean not entirely glossy.

I will check it out, Japanese anime world is interesting. And I should move on for something new comparing "Hokuto no Ken", "Saint seya" and "Captain Tsubasa" :D In these years Japanese are crazy for "One Piece"... everyone!

If that symbol is written on with a pen/marker, then you should get rid of the white drop-shadow you have on it. That, along with the slight inner-shadow you have, implies that it's embossed.

One way of making it seem like it's written could be to have it be a flat colour with some wear on the ink. I know you're not going for realism, but just a little ink-wear would go a long way.

Love this! I'm actually rewatching all of Dragon Ball right now in the subtitled version to help me learn Japanese. Definitely my favorite anime ever :)
