Preserving the familiarity of the iOS tab bar for usability reasons was important, but I wanted a recessed feel to the buttons. It'll play well with the rest of the app's UI.
It seems to me that you should either go one direction or another. Keep the metrics all the same as a normal tab bar, but style it differently. Seeing the blue glossy icon on this kind of tab bar is weird for me to see. And why are the others recessed too?

That's good feedback, thanks. I'm not as concerned about the dimensions, but I think I will try out a version with only the selected state recessed.
