What if you inverted the "Design (star) Union" of the top one so "Design" and "Union" were in black and the star was in red? When scaled down, there seems to be more attention drawn to the knocked out "Southern" rather than the two lines maintaining equal emphasis.
Just a thought.

Really digging the top one! I think the contrast on "Southern" should take precedence over the contrast of "Design Union".
