Hello friends! Here is progress on some landing page elements with a freshly updated plane. We'll be launching it soon @Mixpanel. Let me know what you think. :)
Thanks to @Prathyush @Matt, @Brian and @Jeff for the constructive critique on the previous icon. This inspired me to take a new direction to give the plane a more unique style.
The shape of this reminds me too much of sparrow - IMO if you don't want people drawing a connection to that, it shouldn't be a paper plane that is so similar.
Sparrow was quite popular so I am sure there will be a lot of others drawing the same connection.
Thanks for the reminder, @Manik. The plane is simply an icon element for the page and is not being used for the brand of the company or any particular desktop/mobile app icon.
I don't think Sparrow has a monopoly on paper planes drawn at this angle.
@Mason / They certainly don't have a copyright but they have some solid brand recognition in the community - that's my only point.
I'm not saying it is the logo but it is a prominent item on the layout & in this shot so I'm commenting specifically in relation to that.
Naturally, changing it is up to you - I'm simply pointing out that the similarity of the shape (or even lack thereof from the design point of view) lends itself to a connection to sparrow.
@Manik Rathee the sparrow team was acquired by Google, and will slowly die because the product will not be iterated on going forward. besides, the dimensions do not look to be the same at all.
@Manik Rathee Sparrow has not penetrated the world as much as you may think - we've also made a good effort publicly to do original work which is all that we care about. If people think "sparrow" or "email" because of the icon, then we've actually succeeded. - Suhail

@Rob - I'm not saying they stole or copied anything here. I'm saying people will make the connection - that's all.
Dimensions could be completely different but the overall end product could still look similar.
Regardless - it isn't going to be changed so it is a moot point.

@Manik Rathee I knew it wasn't Sparrow from the second I saw the company was called Mixpanel
