    If anything I feel you've lost contrast. You've made it harder to distinguish between the background and foreground. I think there needs to be a bit more left and right padding on the tabs. They look too tall and skinny right now. Other than that I like it.

    @Flavius Mihaiu I think you have a good point there.

    I have two problems, the first is space is at a premium and the second is users can upload their own profile backgrounds.

    I'm just unsure if using a semi opaque white background for the tabs is the way to go?

    If horizontal space is at a premium, maybe you could decrease the height to compensate? Now, regarding the contrast, I really like the idea of the different background and I can see it actually works quite well. Maybe a slight dropshadow, even one that forms an partly opaque border might work. Just something to distinguish between the two colours when the background is very light. In this case, there would be no need for opaque buttons. If the top of non-active tabs was white while the bottom was of the particular border colours (ie a gradient from top to bottom), the tabs would looks almost as if they were behind the big wrapping box. Just some ideas to think about.
