i think i might do this in illustrator (flexibility and so on...), but since it's a slightly improved sketch and in addition rejected one, i preferred not to. and there are tons of layers indeed ;)
You beat the CoreAnimation icon by a long shot anyway. But yeah keep it up! I'm also having second thoughts about designing scalable stuff in photoshop for the same reason. But they always do look good at the original scale.

Glad to know a bit more about your process. Seems to me it would be possible to do solely in Ps, though it might require more layers. Anway great job!
