When I saw the first Windows 8 beta screenshot I was kind of disappointed because the GUI ist not that bad but could be much more better, so why not combine the simple Metro UI with the Windows 7 desktop UI. Phyek's shot ( http://dribbble.com/shots/576250-Windows-UI-Concept ) had a right direction, so I tried to build my own vision of how Windows 8 should be. Full view is attached.

Windows 8 should be completely skinnable with tools like Stardock's Window Blinds (http://www.stardock.com/products/windowblinds) after they update it, so you can theoretically make Windows 8 look like whatever you want. For the interative elements, Rain Meter works (they should be releasing a Windows 8 version). As for this design, the gradients and colours are lovely. Something like this could not be a default option, though, because the GUI needs to take into account special needs, multiple languages, etc. and there just isn't enough contrast and spacing to account for this. Developing a truly global and accessible ui is an incredibly difficult undertaking ;)

I like the way this is going, but I think there are a lot of different margins, opacities and font sizes going on. I think it would be even more calm, especially if there a lots of applications running, if you could tighten it a bit more. Good work :)

@Theis Kofoed Hjorth yes of course, there could be much more improvement to this, it was just a quick concept ;)
@Serina Patterson I agree, I always missed the feature to customize my desktop without a third party tool. Agree, too with the GUI/Contrast for an average user.
