Not so impressed with that huge funnel on the side of Apple's new FaceTime icon. The rest of it is fine enough, nicely drawn. So I was thinking a better way would be to incorporate a more practical representation of 'audio' enabled.
Or my Alternative alternative icon.
A speaker mesh of sorts surrounding the lens. Just seems to be a more compact design...
There are a number of ways they could have done this without adding such a monstrous appendage to the poor icon. It's as though they felt obliged to use iChat's inner bubble icon for some reason. Not necessary Apple.
The only problem is that this grey icon looks quite similar to the 'camera' icon on iOS. So looking forward to seeing other people's ideas on alternative FaceTime icons.

I like it, Apple's version reminds me somewhat of a robotic bird.
I have to side with Apple on this one. While I do like your logo, it lacks the character that currently is FaceTime. Apple's logo looks like a fun cartoon character and ties with the plethora of new icon work going on standard with OS.
But nice job making a camera! Clean and sharp.
Mike : My problem is the 'speaker', imagine that in your dock. There are not many Dock icons that are so off balance, to get it to fit in the icon space, the main body will look tiny.
Then imagine that on a small scale dock. I think it's too cumbersome for an Apple logo, there are plenty of other ways without making it so 'awkward' looking. The Disk Utility icon has a slightly protruding stethoscope, which also looks a little awkward in a dock.
Just seems odd to me. :-(
Thank you soo much. The Apple icon doesnt match the 'square' proportion that all the other icons follow. I was about to do this myself :)
I'm with you G. I wonder if treating the lens as an eye and adding the bridge of a metallic nose could have yielded something more memorable and representative of Facetime.
I'm liking where Apple's going with Lion. It's brilliant to see their successful mobile devices influencing the Mac and the Mac OS.
