That's funny how we often think along the same lines. I did them initially to be on the right in active state but the client asked me to reverse. I don't know why but to me (intuitively) it makes more sense to have them on the right too so I agree with you 100%.

It helps if I show them a couple real world examples in those cases – maybe they just don't know. Or they're a UI Contrarian.

I think the low saturation of the red "off" state works well, but maybe have the green a bit more vibrant to better indicate the "on" state?
