I've been playing around with my swashes and flourishes for a while now, trying to figure out what makes good ones look like good ones and most of mine look like crap, lol.
Is there some kind of mathematical approach? A grid system? I mean, I can get the curves plenty straight, but I'm still stuck on the fact that some just look so much better than others.
Sorry to beat up your shot page here with all this, but thanks
for any good insight you might have! :)
@Ryan Hamrick You seem to be doing pretty well with it in my opinion. I don't know about any specifically mathematical approach to creating swashes (but I am far from being an expert) although I'm sure that curves adhering roughly to fibonnaci spirals tend to be the easiest and most harmonious on the eye.
Word! Yeah, the golden ratio/fibonacci sequence never hurts, huh? And thanks for the kind words! I feel like I'm finally starting to sort of get it a little more, but when you're learning for yourself, the number of errors seems to equal the number of trials a lot of times. :)
Absolutely beautiful curves (the 'r' in particular) and perfect weight/stroke contrast. I love how the very ends of the swashes almost seem to disappear into the background too.

Been playing around a little more with this type. Still not really sure what I'll end up doing with it.
