Thanks, Samantha! The process is pretty simple. I start out with a photographic reference that I use to draw the components on good ol' paper. Next, I scan and copy into Illustrator where I use the Live Trace tool. I start with the outline and then scan in a layer each for the highlight and shadow. I make sure I draw them "sketchy" so that the strokes don't lose their natural feel. Final compositing is done back in Photoshop.
Love the illustration, and really appreciate you detailing the method. I'm assuming the Three-Hour Rule is "get it done in 3 hours, if it isnt great by then, it never will be?"
Thanks, Jesse. I use the 3-hour-rule to time-bracket my effort as to not derail everything else that happens in the day. The hope (or faith) is that I have my process refined enough now that I can actually pull these off in the time frame. So far, it's working!

Hands are so hard to draw, these look really good. Did you do this offline and then scan it in, or in illustrator, or on the ipad?
