My favorites of the group:
Top mid, mid and maybe top right with some tweaking. Did they want to play with the exclamation mark? Might find it's place in one of these.
I think we can eliminate the "x" / cross style because your other versions are much better. Plus it looks like scissors.

I agree the top 3 are definitely heading in the right direction. I'm not ready to rule out the top left one yet. The client requested a masculine feel and I beilieve it achieves that pretty well.

Nice exploration Jay. Really liking the top right one. It's got some great character to it. Would it be worth checking out one with the "Hey" in the speech bubble with the rest in one of the badge shapes? Just a thought.
