I needed to standardize the social share buttons for http://publico.pt pages. I recreated the basic share buttons provided from both facebook and twitter and tweaked them to make them more consistent when presented together.
The top, bigger, ones are for a news piece page - for a 145px column.
The smaller are for other pages and iniciatives where sharing is required - they will usually display along the header.
I didn't want to re-invent the wheel - I simply needed these to be cohesive and play nice with each other. I did change the facebook button quite a bit, but I tried to make it retain as much of the original identity as possible.
But how will Publico be able to customize the appearance? Aren't the buttons inserted in an iframe controled by facebook and twitter respectively? Do they support passing an image to use instead of their own? I'm very curious...
Actually, the current share buttons in a newspiece are custom coded ( http://publico.pt/1461571 ) vs the special page horizontal share buttons, that were implemented by me using the code from both twitter and facebook respectively ( http://publico.pt/parlamento ).
What will happen ( when the all-mighty gods from the IT department get on to it ) is that we'll be using custom code so we can achieve this visual cohesiveness.
I'll keep y'all posted on this once they're up and running! ;)

aha! at last, someone solves this stupid problem in a non-decorative way.
you should contact addthis or twitter or facebook or whatever.
Like John Cleese said "IT MAAAAAAKKKKKEES ME MAAAAAD"
You solved a real design problem not just decoration.

I love the fact that they're just evolved versions of the standard buttons. People recognise those buttons, so this is a great move.

Thanks Jamie. that was the whole point. This is for a newspaper, so instant recognition from a very diverse crowd is essential!
