Another item ticked off the to-do list — the new installer icon for iStat Server 2. We're not close to release yet, but we're close to being close. Or something. Hey, it's a big project.
@Creative Goat Thanks. It's intended to be a custom replacement for the standard OS X installer package icon. The blue is taken from the main app icon, so they're themed together.
@Callan Rowe It's all just Photoshop, using shape layers almost exclusively. I don't think there's anything particularly tricky about the process used.
This is the final iStat Server icon (the server companion app to iStat for iOS).
Details — Early images and some of the document's techniques explained.
Movie — I saved lots of versions of the icon as I was working. This is the result.
iStat Server 512 PSD.zip — The full, final Photoshop document of the icon.
iStat Server 512.png — A bigger version for ogling.
If you're going to scale this icon (or one set up like it), then you'll need the Scale Patterns to 100% script and Mask Feathering scripts, because both techniques are used heavily and scaling without the scripts will look hideous.
The rules: This PSD is provided for education purposes only. If you use it or parts of it in a commercial product, I will hunt you down and feed you live cockroaches. Feel free to replicate the tricks though.

I personally love it, it kinda resonates with the dropbox logo, but i think it's original enough, and i love the blue cube of 3dish love.

Dig it. I must say it reminds me a lot of this one though (which is fine seeing it's a freebie, lol).

The istat icon on the side is sort of too squished, looks oval.
Add some styrofoam for fun :)

Looks really nice. What did you make this in? Is it fake 3d in illustrator or did you model and texture it in a 3d application?

They're both available here, for free, because we're nice.
