It's not often I get to do full-sized 512x512 icons, but when I do it's a nice opportunity to work in subtle little details that'll never reproduce at smaller sizes.
Not intentionally, though I can see how it looks that way. It's a path of latitude/longitude/elevation dots, blurred and tilted and generally abstracted. Similar to: http://dribbble.com/shots/638-Aaah
