I went forward with plan B for the moment as plan A is a bit more complicated and will take more time. Still a work in progress though. Oh yeah, and we submitted to the app store yesterday. WOOT!
More to come… I'll shout on the twitters when you all can go press your digits against it.
@Matt Anderson Built in Photoshop, with certain pieces from Illustrator. Still needs some polish on the cap, and maybe a few more refractions, but until I have time to try out some different perspectives, this should do. Excited about partnering with @Nicholas L. Eby to do a second take on it.
If you zoom into 6400000000000 % I see some small blurred pixels in the lid. Most users will be doing this to your icon. So I would fix that. Also I'm not sure people will like "Just Family" when they want to add friends. I would fix that. I would also like to see this pic from a tilted camera angle, so please provide that. I think you should share the PSD so we can all see how you did this without using whatever I use. Please provide that. I think you might have stolen this blue color in jar from everyone on Dribbble. Please fix that. I don't see my avatar on the jar. Please add that.
Other than these small things, I think this is a great work in progress. Please follow me on twitter...
I love the jar .) Well done! I hope I won't insult you with my humble opinion.
Anyway have you been trying other colour combinations? I guess you have chosen these because of colour theme of the application, but transparent (greyish) jar with red lid would look wonderfull. I think that the corners of this reflection should be more symmetrical and rounded http://cl.ly/Huai. I also think the cover deserves more contrast, sharpen and a bit more of shadows. Especially these small thingies http://cl.ly/Hu29 so the lid look kinda metalic. And I don't know, don't you think that this part http://cl.ly/Hu2f is too smooth, far more than the bottom?
To @Eric Hoffman I somehow disagreeing with your first point. Even if nobody is going to see that, you still should be making pixel perfect things.
@Jan Vu Nam Thanks for the detailed feedback! I really appreciate it.
I tried to keep the corners of the reflection consistent with what @softfacade did on this: http://drbl.in/bfzD which @justfamily is still happily using. But yes, my initial approach would be to make the reflections more rounded, but it really depends on the type of lighting that is being reflected.
I totally agree with you on the lid/cover. Its still a bit unfinished, and quite frankly, I'm surprised no one called me out on these http://udrbly.us/8GVM I also agree with you that http://cl.ly/Hu2f is too smooth. Will polish it up a bit.
Thanks again, and I really appreciate it!
@Anthony Lagoon I think the cover needs a bit of work but other than that - I like it very much! That blue is just awesome and so much of details - I'm sure it will pop out of other apps on iPhone desktop.
Colors are great! There are two things looking weird for me - cover and white reflections. Cover is not as sharp as glass part. And reflections... Maybe they could be a bit softer. I'm not sure. Anyway, it's awesome work and I'm looking forward to see final version!

I agree, the lid could be pushed further to match the depth of the base. Awesome work man!

Very nice @Anthony Lagoon. Really liking the amount of detail you were able to get into this, especially for an app icon.

crazy good glass effects goon. Is there enough contrast to keep "just family" readable when the app shows at normal size on the phone?
