Sometimes it's hard to find good reasons for placement and spacing other than pure aesthetics. For the new SceneTap mark, I'm utilizing it's own characters and elements at 100%,50%, and 25% to measure spacing, placement and negative space.
Thanks @Ryan Davis , I feel like with aesthetics it's hard to defend design decisions objectively. Twitter's revised logo (made entirely of 4 sizes of intersecting circles) inspired me to seek some purpose in spacing/placement from the mark's existing elements.

I like to think that this sort of thing does lend a certain intangible consistency to the design.
