Clever concept! It's too bad this is the last piece. Would've loved to see more of these. Really love the illustration series. Cant wait to read the article.
Not at all Ben, but in a way it's kind of the point i'm exploring for my article. Should we as designers be looking for new ways to convey certain themes or continue to use ones that are easily understood by service users and consumers? Our job after all is communication, abstract ideas are potentially exclusive rather than inclusive.
The pen is a saturated form but by compounding it (like the cross pollination of technology) new ideas emerge, OR does compounding only offer a short term and quick way of generating ideas in an increasingly competitive and growing off-the-shelf market?
Are we, as designers, expected to evolve consumer perceptions or play to what they already know? (I suspect it's a combination, or what is probably referred to as incremental rather than revolutionary development).
I think there is a fine line between originality, creativity and clear communication and that's what I'm exploring.

This is the last piece I've designed to illustrate an article I'm writing about compounded visuals in identity design.

Really clever, Rich. The way the negative space on the pen nib also works to separate the sails worked out perfectly.
