@Greg Bruening I had a feeling that the hidden numbers might bug some people, but are the hidden numbers enough for the user to hover and check their notifications? Are the numbers even necessary for a user to check their notifications? I did intend for the numbers to display fully on hover. Thank you for the comment!
@Joe Barber Thank you for the feedback! This is a bit of an experiment to see if hidden information is more enticing for interaction than information that is fully displayed. Would you interact with a navigation like this more often, or only when the numbers are more than 10?
@Michael Sevilla The more I think about it, in most cases it's really only going to matter to me that SOMETHING has happened, not how much. But somehow having the numbers half there seems frustrating, while just having an indicator (i.e. dribbble activity) seems "minimal".
@Michael Sevilla I think if a "you have a notification" is all you're going for, just the red tab is enough. Personally, when Facebook says I have 6 notifications, I don't care that there are 6 as I'm going to click the tab anyway to see what is there.
Might be a matter of opinion but I think as it stands now the numbers are hurting more than helping the design.
Gorgeous shot. But I do have to agree that the numbers should be visible.
In regards to removing the numbers and just having a red triangle - the problem you run into is it becomes something easy to ignore and doesn't let you know how many 'items' are waiting for you. There is a big difference between 1 and 200 notifications waiting for you.
Keep it usable by showing the full number with a larger red triangle. Better UX.

A proposed navigation with sliced notifications.

I love the slice but it makes the numbers essentially impossible to read. Perhaps an on-hover treatment to show the "full" notification?

On hover could be really frustrating if you're continually having to over to see how many new messages you have. Why not just make the slice bigger?

Maybe I'm crazy.
