This was an earlier concept we didn't end up using, but I did like how it turned out.

Excited to start inking this one. =)
P.S., before anyone points it out, yes, I know I spelled it with an 's' instead of 'z'. That's because the NZ spelling of the word was requested.
They are both lovely, really like the i e and the line shading.
Great stuff, Sean! I’m curious; is it still considered a ligature with the i and e, even when skipping a letter or more?
Good question @Tad. I'd be inclined to say no. I think of it more as the 'e' is helping finish out the 'i' by dotting it, merely as a courtesy. Essentially they're friends with benefits—not really going steady.
LOVE IT
Love it! Really like the shading on this one.
Hahah Sean, that is the best typographic description ever.

Ha! Awesome, thanks Sean :D
See? Nothing wrong with being friends with benefits...err...in the typographic context.
Nice job on this @Sean.
I think this concept should be turned into a really amazing typeface that has some pretty beneficial ligatures. ;) For realz though...
both look amazing Sean!
