   The gray background is cloth texture... I made this from a photo of painting canvas, then made it a pattern so it fit into 200px X 200px square and set it as a pattern in background. From this I just played with blending options..

   If you would like to create these, its best to use a texture that that similar throughout... pick a point and define and area that you would like to use as the pattern.. then refine the edges to the pattern matches up... Somewhat different to creating pixel patterns as you don't have to be so exact.
