Had a bit of a brainpocalypse this morning. I've been grappling with how to fit in power-ups for a while now. I didn't want to tie them to specific resolutions; it would be too limiting to only have fireballs when you're 8-bit or limit flying to when you're 16-bit. At some point during the night I came up with the idea of hoodies.
When you stomp certain types of enemies they leave behind a skin that Mimeo can wear granting him special powers in game and on the overworld. There will be four:
Snowsquatch freezing breath. extra traction in icy levels. freeze enemies and water. frozen enemies can be thrown. frozen surfaces can be shattered. freeze rivers on overworld to access secret areas.
Firepuss (née Bakeneko) fireballs. ignite oil patches and dry brush. burn away brush on overworld to access secret areas.
Narwhelp (new, baby narwhale) electric blast from horn. improved mobility underwater. shock larger enemies. power devices in game and on overworld to access secret areas.
Glyde (new, sugar glider) brief flight, slowed descent. wind gust to reflect projectiles. fill sails. power windmills. fly up cliffs on the overworld to access secret areas.
Mimeo is turning into a Mariotroidvania. We'll see how much of this I can actually implement...
This is getting so awesome Shaun. I cannot wait to get my hands on this game!
The hoodie idea is cool. I think the designs portray the powers they have very well. One thing: is the Narwhelp hoodie kind of water and lightning? The horn and the color, to me, says water power, but it seems like it is a mix.
@Jake Narwhelp is water and lightening. The two go hand-and-hand in my mind (in videogames anyway).
@Jesse Shape and context. Firepuss' ears point up, Glyde's are flat-topped and he has vertical stripes where as Firepuss only has a snout. Both will appear when you dispose of their respective enemy who will be sufficiently differentiated—if not in appearance than in behavior.
@Ryan User testing is still a ways off. I need to build out Mapt more so building levels that make good use of resolution switching isn't such a bear. Also since I'm doing everything (wearing many hoodies ;), user testing at this stage would further fracture my workflow (getting feedback on things I'm not currently focused on) and grind progress to a halt. It will probably be pretty polished before I open it up to a beta.
@Jesse The Japanese are way ahead of you (and me).
@Dan, Hiring requires funding. Funding requires a business plan. At the moment, I'm flying by the seat of my pants and as you've noted, quite enjoying it. Mint and Fever are covering my time but that's about it. I spent my MakeWork grant money on hardware.
I've never really gotten into Pokemon (I've tried). It's funny, for every new enemy name I come up with I google to make sure that a Pokemon by that name doesn't already exist. I've had a few collisions before settling before :)
Everyone go home now, Shaun just used up all the Awesome for the day.
I love these. The tail on Firepuss and the extra length on Glyde (which has a minor thought of a young kid's batman outfit with the color and ears.) are especially cool.
There has never been a better idea in the history of video games than using a hoodie to illustrate which powers the protagonist can use.
You know, I started to type that because I realized how ridiculous it sounded to make an absolute statement like that. Then I thought to myself, "As silly as it sounds, it may actually be true..."
This is awesome, Shaun! I love that you're starting to incorporate a bit of Metroid influence, but be sure not to take it too far. I've been giving Metroid a *lot* of thought lately, and I'm not sure how much it applies to Mimeo. What you're describing sounds a bit more like Super Mario World, but with some updates and I'd urge you to keep down that path.
That said, if I've misunderstood and you have other ways of incorporating Metroid elements, feel free to hit me up to talk map design. That's easily the most fundamental aspect of the series, and it's where most of my brain time is spent these days.

Awesome, Shaun. I wonder how distinguishable these will be in the lowest resolution, especially Firepuss and Glyde.

I second Jesse's comment.
Any idea on your timeframe when you expect to start user testing?

You've probably already thought of this, but these hoodies would make for great Mimeo merchandising (and conference swag!)

@Shaun It definitely works and you are right. I guess the only thing I was thinking of was Pokémon (Pikachu & Squirtle).

Hoodies: Fashionable at Any Resolution
by Shaun Inman
2- and 4-bit Mimeo totally look like Max from Where the Wild Things Are—something I am perfectly comfortable with. Not a bad haul for before lunch.
Too bad in each resolution Mimeo requires about sixteen frames of animation. 16 * 4 * (5 - 1) = aw crap.
