Like I promised, here's a warmer version of my high tech safe icon - initially inspired by Eddie's awesome sketch over here: http://drbl.in/dSlv and Dash's rebound over there: http://drbl.in/ersR
Also, many thanks to Warner McGee (http://bit.ly/eEi3ZG) who encouraged me to continue working on this, and the many awesome dribbblers who commented on my previous shots.
Question: Which version do you prefer? Warm or cold?
Colder version feels more sterile to me, whereas warm version feels more like you're unlocking treasure. Both look good. Did you make this in 3d, or just Photoshop?
@Eddie Lobanovskiy Thanks dude! Yeah, I think I agree. I guess metal is associated with "cold" because of it's high thermal conductivity. Ah, let's say in the warm version, the safe hides a pretty hot nuclear mini-reactor. Must be cooled down before touched :D
@Riki Tanone Love your unlocking treasure theory! Yeah, modeled and rendered in modo 601, then some heavy post in Photoshop using a tablet to paint the scratches and sketch, fix some glitches in the render and adjust hue / curves / exposure / vibrance / color balance / etc. Previously I always tried to get the render 100% right, but as it turns out, it's much easier to do certain things in post production. Also applied that Taptanium logo in post (it's slightly out of ideal perspective - wouldn't have happened if I had done that as a displacement map in 3D ;)
@Virgil Pana Thanks a lot for your feedback! Curious... why the blue one? Because metal = cold?
@Tobia Crivellari Glad you like it! I wish I had your calligraphy skills to spice up that sketch with some awesome annotations :D
@Tobia Crivellari Luxology modo 601 and Photoshop. Guess the first would be new for you, but you can definitely learn it. When I started a few years ago I didn't even know how to cut something out in Photoshop. There was a graphics dude who helped me with that. Lux has a really great community, and the workflow is just awesome.
Yes, it's new. I've never heard it before! It's a 3D software modeling like Maya or 3D Studio Max, I saw into its website. Interesting!! I understand, so you're great if in a couple a years you became so good!!! Congrats mate!!! @Franz (Taptanium)
@Tobia Crivellari Haha, thanks man. There's still so much stuff to assimilate! Yeah, it's pretty much like Maya or 3DSMax. Actually you could start with Blender, but modo's UI is a big plus.
@Franz (Taptanium) Really man, you're great!! I really wish to have your skills to create this things..I love this stuff! You can create amazing icons!! :-) Yes, I know both! I used 3DSMax the University and Maya by myself (cause I have a Mac...better! :-P )! :-) But I'm not a ninja with them! :-/ ....
@Tobia Crivellari I have no experience with 3DSMax or Maya, but have been told by other 3D artists that modo is much easier to get started with. Guess the best way to grasp it is to do a bunch of tutorials.

Both versions look great, but i'd have to say colder version works better with steel/metal. :)

Nice, I really like the scratches over the metal surface.

@Tobia Crivellari I'm sure you can do that too!
@Santiago Borray Thanks dude! Wasn't sure at first if scratches are appropriate on the frame, but it does make it look less boring ;)
