As far as there are enough votes for both styles, I guess you have to make decision based on what suits the overal interface style of the application itself. Also IMO in this case design in not so much about the appearance and look, but about the feel.
And I think to decide you'd better make prototype by 'fast coding' it and testing it. That gives you precise feeling of the interface.
