@Shaun Moynihan, about your question. Before answer, sorry for my English, i think in my answer will be a lot of mistakes.
Nevetheless, some elements during video converstion (user don't touch screen for 10 sec) would become transparent (opcaity is above 10-15%). This elements are: Add Person (at the top-right corner), and all items at the bottom panel exept my video stream (big circle at the bottom).
So, during conversation user would be see only video.
I'm supporter of smart interface and i think that user should see only neccessary elements. This is why i make all functions buttons transparent. When i have a video call with friends, I need to see their video streams and then only function's areas with icons for tap.
As you can see at previous shot from this project I don't show menu, later i will post a shot and descriptions why i make this decision. So, feel free to follow me for updates if it interesting for you :)

Hello to anyone,
As a ixd designer, I like innovations. When I designed this app, I tried to give it some specifics. Because the app is composed of modules, I decided not to display menu, and display it in the case when the user wants. So, user can open menu anytime anywhere on the screen by DOUBLE TAP. Menu will slide down from the top.
It is like in iPhone, when you want to see what apps are running. I think this idea can live.
What do you think?
