I rather like, this, though I also liked the version with color. The different level of light in the left part of the railed confused me a bit, though, Why not a consistent color?
Thanks @Ted. The idea with the gradient was to create the most contrast near the knob, to draw the eye there. I think it works best with the white track, though I could see how it might come across as a lighting effect, which wouldn't make sense physically. Is that what you mean?

Yeah, I was just confused as to where the light source was coming from and what (if anything) was casting a shadow.
