Inside the mind of Edgar Allen Poe. More lettering practice, script is 100% hand-drawn. Be sure to check out the ammo box design I just posted too! Any and all comments welcome. I've got some major weight inconsistencies here that I wasn't sure about, since I want it to look hand-drawn but not sure about how far it should go, haha. What do you all think? (You can really see it in the "bre")
What font is that Script? :p Really though that's perfect all consistent weights and curves. The end to the last e is great to really balances the piece out. Great work Joseph
Oh, man, @Joseph, this is wonderful! A great piece! The only thing I see is the "M" in Macabre needs to be refined, more like the first "M" Otherwise, this thing is perfect, totally jealous!
I like the 2nd M being different, the balance created by the way it almost leans over the A is great. I think if it mirrored the top it would lose some of the character.
The only thing I can think of is the s-t-e connexion in mystery, which is not flowing as well as the rest of the letters. You already spotted on the b-r-e part, but I think it's right, maybe the b and r could be a bit bolder but otherwise this is some very nice type, and this hand-drawn feeling you wanted works well with the textured background and old-fashioned illustration !
This looks great! The style feels appropriate to the theme. I think you could make a couple of refinements without losing the hand-drawn charm of this piece.
I agree with @Andrew Terpening; the second 'M' could be tweaked. I'm not saying it should match the first 'M' exactly, but the lead stroke is too heavy, and the junction at the upper right would look better if it were pointed like the first 'M'.
The other thing is the connecting stroke at t-e ... it could be smoothed out (in addition to b-r-e, which you already mentioned).
Thanks for the tips all, I actually agree with all of you @Andrew, @Chris and @Jeff, I should probably tweak it a little but leave it not quite like the first one.
Thanks @Joachim, you're coming up with some great stuff of your own too! Yes, that pesky "s" that always bothers me haha
Yeah @Jeff, that does look awkward now that you've pointed it out! Thanks!
Love this one, absolutely gorgeous style. You really should have been born pre-computer days! The colour palette looks beautiful too and I really like the thin blue shadow outline. The only thing that bugs me a little is the weight distribution on the 't'. I think it would work better with the left stroke being the heavier one. If you were to hand write it, the right stroke would be the one going up, so it would be thin and the weight would then naturally be heavier on left, as it's the downstroke (which is what your other characters do).
Like @Chris said, that last 'e is just fantastic and I love the swash on the bottom 'M' too.
Oh yes... hand-drawing is so much fun! Glad you like it. That's a good point about the 't', @Claire! I hadn't thought about that at all. That's one thing I've been learning recently is that type should reflect natural writing motions, one of the things Bas Jacobs talked about at the workshop a week or two ago.
Haha thanks @Colin! I have huge respect for your work, it's really encouraging to be getting this positive feedback from the guys/girls that have serious talent!

Nice work - hand lettering is so difficult for me, but you have done great work with this - and the ammo box! Great job!
