Why not use the standard tab bar? Why deviate?

@Louie - Well...I don't have a good answer for that. My thought is that it is close enough to the standard bar, with just minor cosmetic differences that give an extra bit of detail. I'm not super original or anything with that, I actually pulled those styles (arrow and indented active state) from the Twitter app.
