I would love to see this happen. Red is so, so, unnecessary.

Interesting idea. I make sure I check/view everything with the red badge, if not I feel like they're yelling at me. They make me feel ashamed, like i'm lazy...maybe I am, huh.

    Anyway, the blue is nice.

Yeah, TJ, that's exactly the point. It's silly to feel that way about email, let alone RSS feeds or games in Words-with-Friends—yet many of us do.

I'm not even entirely sold on the blue as the solution, but not making it red would be huge.

Interesting: I just noticed that in my iTunes, if there's a new TV show episode, I get the blue alert circle.

Russell, very interesting. I hadn't noticed that.

I completely agree with your views, I don't even show my reeder unread count because it is just such an eyesore having 550 in red LOL

Do you think it would be too simplistic to eliminate the badges completely, and replace then with a different app icon state? We'd lose the exactness of knowing that we have 21 new articles to read, but it could read less like a demand and more like a suggestion.

Justin, I think it would be fantastic—or give devs the added option of some kind of “unfinished” status in addition to the numeric badge. I didn't explore any of those design options, but I think it would be fun to. I'd rather know I have unread RSS items than the specific number of items.
