I've been watching stuff on Netflix on my iPhone while I eat breakfast for the past couple of weeks (because my macbook's battery is dead and etc etc you don't need to know this LOL). Anyway, I just mocked up what I'd like a movie player app thing to look/function like.
I always have problems with the orientation with every app I've used, so I thought a button that flips it 90° each time to tap it would be better. I don't know anyone who uses the forward/backward seek buttons so I got rid of them. The volume is at the top because I don't change that often. I had the seek bar thing at the bottom so the preview isn't hidden by my hand.
I love your choice to have the progress bar at the bottom, as that's definitely the most important element in the screen, but the Play button on the left hand side seems like a big bummer for a right handed user. Also, I think there's a bit too much going on in there. The frame preview, for example, could be replaced by an actual full screen preview (assuming it's doable in terms of download speed) and the volume slider could maybe disappear altogether. :)
Have you considered maybe tap to show the UI and have it overlay the movie? That way you can push in more space for the actual movie itself since it's the most important part of the whole thing.
I like where this is going though, the purple is a very bold, but it works.
@Daryl Ginn Yeah that's the idea :) Tap to show UI. Blade Runner is a wide movie, that's the full frame across the width of the phone. Maybe I should have used another video.
This is nicely done. How about a tween effect instead of an arrow to represent the portrait to landscape action ? I think the current arrow that links the two metaphors together could also suggest transfer of something from one device to another whereas, I think a tween would tie them both together and show that it's the same device transitioning into another orientation. Shitty edit : http://cl.ly/GwE6
Here's what I feel. The Done button should be on the right. Keep it consistent with every other iOS app. I'd love to see an iPhone app where the video's orientation is locked on landscape. I have portrait lock on all the time, except for when I want to watch videos. That's a button gone from the UI. Volume control? There's buttons on the device for that. Maybe if you adjusted them a little HUD could fade in like the current bezels, but nicer.
The purple is awesome, although heavy IMO for a video app. Makes the screen seem small. The preview on the scrolling is neat. Good work!
@Christopher Downer You're right about the controls. The reason why I personally would like them is because my iPhone case has a stand that is awkward to press the +/- buttons with LOL.
I'm coming up with something entirely different right now, I think you'll really like this :3

Really don't like the purple.
EDIT: Actually think it's because there's no differentiation on the colours, maybe make the progress bar white or something?

Different.

Really sharp, this rounded nav bar is awesome.
And I think all the decisions you have made are great.

This looks awesome, I love purple too :) Out of curiosity why the flip button instead of an orientation lock button?
