I am really sorry for crashing the party but I think the icon is rather mundane.
Please don't take me in the wrong sense. I have always been a great fan of Sofa's work. Almost alltheiconsyouhaveworked on have been my favourites. And I rank the people such as you, Jasper, Joy and Dirk very high up in my favourite graphic/interaction designers list.
The only thing that I can comment in the current icon that is remarkable is the typography and everyone knows that you guys so damn well excels in it.
But apart from that, it may either be the high expectation or the plain style that you have adopted to gel well with the rest of the Facebook app suite, that ruined it for me. Also, may be the amount of camera icons that Dribbble has thrown at me might have also influenced my opinion. But since this icon will forever be connected in my brain as the output of Sofa along with 20 other greatest creative minds in the world, it is just not going to stand out for me. Sorry, really sorry.
But congratulations on the launch and I'm yet to play with the UI which from the looks of it, is going to be an entirely different story ;)
I love this icon. Looks great on the phone. It's a real relief to see something native of this quality finally come from Facebook; however...
The thing I don't get is the concept of the app itself in relation to the basic use-case of Facebook, as I understand it. To me, the core of Facebook is the flow of updates and messages from my friends, regardless I their type (photos, statuses, messages, events, etc).
So, I now have 3 Facebook apps on my iPhone: Facebook, Facebook Messenger and now Facebook Camera.
With the release of Facebook Camera, finally a polished, intuitive, beautiful native app has come out of Facebook. Unfortunately though, it's only a subset of that core use-case (for me anyway). I still need to switch between the main (crappy) Facebook app to get all the status updates that aren't photos. Why? Why not just make an app as polished as Facebook Camera that is just Facebook. Switching between 2 apps for one simple use-case is annoying to me, and sadly I'll probably not use Facebook Camera as a result.
I'd disagree with Prathyush. Icons are a bi-product of brand identity. You've made the function of the application abundantly clear with this icon. We know from looking at this, that it is a camera app, and that it was made by Facebook.
I think if you change anything, it would only worsen in quality. This icon has reached the sweetest spot and its mission is complete. I appreciate Prathyush's critique, but I can't imagine what he sees is missing. When lots of folks on Dribbble design camera icons, they essentially create a playground for high-quality and detailed design. It's usually freestyle with no client involved, and the visual metaphor is incredibly simple, so all of the focus is on making it look as extravagant as possible. I'm not saying this is a bad thing by no means - I've seen some great camera icons, but there are certainly less rules.
This icon on the other hand has a large objective, being that it needs to be received as being made by Facebook. The branding placement is far more important than making it look extravagant. Extravagance will simply get in the way. Sure, it needs to stand out. But not for beauty - for being recognisable as a camera application made by Facebook.
And even so, the quality is superb. The lens looks beautiful, and isn't pushed further with any unnecessary graphic devices. There is a perfect balance here. Again, I can't imagine what else Prathyush could expect with this.
I am love with how this looks, but with a greater emphasis on how it works so perfectly. Stunning job guys.
Still don't understand why all these separate Facebook apps aren't just integrated into the ACTUAL Facebook app. Seems like overkill. That said icon looks good!
I really love this camera icon man, much nicer than the stock iOS one, which is why i replaced it on my home screen! Keep it up - the app is great too, really loving the UI.

It's awesome to finally share what we've been working on at Facebook: Camera for iPhone. Here's the iOS icon in all it's glory. I hope you enjoy both.

Really nice @Jorn van Dijk! You've done a great job on both the icon and the app. Did you design the website as well?

@Mitch Bartlett sums it up perfectly. It's all about branding and I think they executed it well.

I can't believe how well this was executed. Perfect really. I looked at it and knew what it was an who made it.

I think that the restraint shown here is commendable. Beautiful icon, great integration of FB brand, no designer ego. Well done.
