I like the cleanness of this - but something about the three steps bothers me. I'm of the school of thought that you should never hide anything that the user doesn't complete an action on, e.g. click to minimize.
Obfuscating the ( 1 ) with a checkmark falls into that case. Perhaps turn the circle into a pill with a 1 and ✓ side by side?
Have you considered making the back button text instead? Perhaps something like "Step 1" inside the back button element. It's probably pretty obvious, but to me the arrow might be saying, "cancel this process," which I don't think is what it does, right?
