I liked Daryl Ginn's redesign of the Rdio app, and had some time over the weekend to play around with my own version. See the attachment for the full screen along with two squared variations. This is based on a Windows OS concept that I put together a while back.
@Zach Forrester, it’s unlikely that the regular desktop apps will improve significantly, but Win 8 is worth taking a look for the new metro environment. I’m really loving the direction MS is taking (I'm a Windows user).
I loved your Windows 8 concepts on the Verge, and this looks really solid as well. The only thing I'm somewhat wary of are the blue gradients on some of the controls. I'm assuming you tried flat ones though, and chose these instead :)
Hi @Maxwell Barvian,
You’re right, the gradients are not really necessary. I added them at the end (probably should have at least removed them from the squared version).
About the Windows concept...I’m thinking of posting a few shots.
Actually, if @Phyek 's design is enough to make me switch, @Daryl Ginn 's design might be enough to make me switch back - both excellent examples of custom UIs that still feel like native apps. You guys should team up on a blog post!
@Phyek Didn't realize you were the guy from those shots from the Verge till just now - fantastic work. Hope Microsoft starts knocking on your door soon!
While I like the design and I think it's well done, I feel that it lacks contrast. People take that for granted - 1 of 12 men are color blind and they might not even know it. Contrast is extremely important in design and if you can improve that here then I would say you're onto something great.
@Henry Moran ,
Good point. I'd definitely tweak the contrast on a real player. I also have a dark version that I'm thinking about posting. Another idea would be to have a "high contrast" option in the settings.

If all the new Windows app look this good, I might have to think about switching.
Or at least installing Parallels, or something.

@Zach Forrester There is never a good enough excuse to switch to windows.
This is looking swish man, good job. Nice use of white space.

This reminds me of the Zune software a little bit, they had these borderless windows too! Nonetheless, really digging this!

Nice work! The last version with the menu at the top is more Metro Style.

love everything, but corners on back arrow might be a px or two too rounded.
