Agree with @Eric R. Mortensen. Maybe when you upload a photo of yourself, you can have an option to keep the helmet overlay on the picture? make one front facing?

@Eric R. Mortensen @Chris Streger That is a real concern. Default avatars are usually kind of terrible but that might help urge users to upload an avatar. These are cool but maybe if everyone else on the site has the same thing going on you might want to upload your own?

@Keenan Cummings I totally see your concern. Maybe you just use the little * logo? It's not terrible but would urge people to upload their own? Use these somewhere else? would hate to see them die.

@Chris Streger I think it's worth trying a nicer generic avatar. Even with a nice avatar I think it would be clear that these are the system defaults and people like to create their own.
Vimeo has a nice little default avatar in varying colors, and foursquare's girl and boy default avatars are pretty nice as well.

These are nice. I would make sure to nudge the highlight stroke on the shield of the white versions left a few pixels to compensate for that illusion of closeness.
