Exactly. Imagine with a slider. You're telling the phone to calculate each tiny size more and reflow all the text. That's not easy.
That's not going to be any smoother than buttons would be. With iOS, reflowing text is more difficult which leads designers to make a different solution, no matter how sexy this could be, it can't be real, yet. Unless you managed to write your own text rendering for Reuters.

@Louie Mantia The smallest increment for text-resizing webkit handles is 1px. Reflowing text from 11px to 12px to 13px is easy, very easy. Of course its not as smooth as text resizing when you pinch to zoom. However it is much better than jumps from 12px to 18px tp 24px.
What you get with this design, is fine tuned control over text-size in a more fluid fashion than what is currently out there.
So yes it can be real, just not as smooth as you're imagining.
@Alex Penny I understand.
With a slider, I would expect the smooth gradation of the control to be reflected in the content area (the typeface getting larger, smoothly). When sliders are typically used, a user expects a smooth transition like volume or brightness. You, however, would want more choice for size. I suppose all that can be said is that's not a compromise I would make. Perhaps tick marks on the slider to snap to?
@Alex Penny Super clean!
@Louie Mantia I hear ya, ticks would be a good compromise.
Here's a quick demo of what the animation actually feels like.
Not too bad, my phone is dead but I imagine it works twice as well on retina.
i like that airplane a lot.
Gunna try to do something fancy if I'm already scrolled down, or will I lose my place? Thats always been my annoyance. It always demos nice if you have the beginning of the article in view. The first word anchors your brain and makes it all make sense. When you're down a few pages, moving that slider makes the text jet past your eyes.
I also don't need to change it that often. It seems too front and center to put it next to share and comment.
Also, is that light source on the slider 120˚ or is that just an optical illusion?
@Brad Ellis Exactly that, the first word should be anchored at the top. Haven't seen any apps try to implement this, annoying.
The bars won't always be there, think "photos app." The majority of the screen will be text, but thats not dribbble worthy so this is showing the tapped state.
Light source sounds about right, looks like a crescent moon on purpose.
@Alex Penny Not trying to pick a fight or anything, but I'm fundamentally opposed to any light source other than 90˚ for iOS devices. This isn't the web. You don't get to choose that. I also oppose your use of the ICS Android icon for "Send Email" being used for share (I'm assuming thats what that icon is).
I do like that its very clean and simple, and your not going overboard with gradients.
How are you handling clipping of the text under the bottom bar? Small HR? Little pocket? Just idly curious.
@Brad Ellis I'm using my own internal LED lighting system.
There's a screen shot in one of the previous comments.
