Had bit of time this arvo to work on this again. The massively simplified A in the first one felt too awkward and just wasn't distinguishing the letter-form enough to be recognisable. I tried including some of the crossbar in the A, but it felt to obvious and ruined the nice movement of all the vertical strokes in the middle. Anyway, this seems to work a little better, for now. I'm sure I'll change my mind again later.
As for the red? I just thought it looked awesome. Don't think I'll use it in my final version though.

Very nice. I like the "a" better now. However, I dig the direction you were heading in. Seeing how many pieces you can eliminate, while still having legibility is a fun challenge. The only thing I'm seeing that might be a little off is the letter "i". It may need a pixel added to it's width. It could just be a side of effect of the small size, thought I'd mention it anyway. Nice work!
@Joe Dearman Hey man, you're right it does look that way, although the strokes should be the same thickness, it probably just needs some hinting in Photoshop.
