Thanks guys. It's a potential cover for my next mix on Designers MX. Features songs that are really creative and always stretch my mind when I'm designing things. I just saw this image of a gun shooting colour and the title 'inspire' in my mind and had to give it a go. I think I like it but I'm not sure, any feedback is welcome.
I quite enjoyed using different media though. Photography, hand-drawn elements, torn paper scanned in and photoshopping.
@Jonathan I have to say I'm not a huge fan of the '>'s spouting from the gun (or the outlines of the splashes), perhaps if neither of those details of there, you'd have a greater visual contrast of simple drop/splash shapes vs the complex, graphic of the gun :)
Entirely up to you though. Smashing work as always!
@Louis Bullock - thanks. I might give that a go. The idea was that it was creativity/inspiration shooting out, a mix of all sort of things. It was supposed to look fairly busy with lots of different styles in there. Hense the torn paper / triangles / hand-drawn bits. But maybe I'll just keep it simple.
@Jonathan I totally getcha, I could see that. Yet I've seen almost too much of this creative collage style, which gets me questioning how far something can go in a direction before it becomes too complex or too simple etc.
I also understand where the illustrative style is/was going too, yet that offset print look is almost becoming too popular if you ask me :)
Perhaps use the aging bits, and some of the hand-drawn (or even handmade?) bits for another cover. Maybe aim for an old vinyl cover, like this? Maybe chuck in some retro sounding tracks or songs that sound nostalgic, inspirational, with a hint of melancholy (for that I'd highly recommend Röyksopp's album Senior, but if that's not your cuppa tea that's all good).
Remind yourself this also: you're the designer. Solve the problem. :) compare the versions side by side, which one stands out?, which works better on a gut-feeling/intuitive level? etc.
There is something about the irony that I like, and the word 'Inspire' associated with the weapon mixed with the tear drop shapes propelling from the gun. I think the twist is what makes it appealing both aesthetically and conceptually.

Looking good. You aren't advocating anti-gun laws though, are you?

Well @Galen, @Jonathan is in the UK so I don't think gun control is as much of a concern for him!

I like the clean version. Very nice color palette too.

@Jonathan Yes, yes, yes! :D Much better imho!
This could be simplified even further if you get rid of the triangles and white smoke too!
Remember this when designing anything:
In design, there is:
Simplicity
& there is
Complexity.
Have a balance of both.
Simple drop shapes, complex gun. That's it! Strong colours in foreground, simple, pale background. Couldn't be simpler! :D
