That's the city where I live. While Bucharest does not have a very strong art nouveau flavor, there are still traces of the style in the old areas.
The letters have a few things that still need attention. As usual, I started with a rough pencil sketch and then turned it to vector in Font Lab. I prefer doing lettering in Font Lab, as I have more control of the curve's handles.
This is really stunning, such a distinctive and beautifully done style. The connection between the 'B' and the 'h' is wonderful, particularly how it extends into that upper loop in the B. I also really like how the 'c' and 'r' mirror each other. Of course, I could go on about that 's-t' ligature too but I'll try to resist!
On another note, I also agree with you about FontLab. The points handle much better and it can be less fiddly than Illustrator.
Absolutely beautiful work. I'm glad I started following you. That B is absolutely exquisite. I think my only point would be that the swash on the T looks a bit unbalanced in its weighting - like it's a bit too heavy when it starts from the crossbar. You've done a superb job keeping the r nice & tight without losing its clarity!
@Claire, almost every swash on the ascenders that I doodle starts with a right-facing loop that leaves a tail behind. Sometimes I erase it and try to think of something more imaginative, but in this case the B was right there and suggested this connection. I've tried to make the r's teardrop as low and as big as possible, to fill the white space, of course, but I think something's wrong with the u, which has a beginning stroke on the second stem as well. I'm glad you mention the st ligature. If I recall correctly DTL Fleischmann has a similar one, with the horizontal swelling on the arch. Speaking of vector editors, have you tried RoboFont? Thank you again for the detailed answer!
@Dave, thank you! With the crossbar of the t I just tried to mirror the swollen curve on the B's spiral, but, you may be right, it would perhaps look better if it were to get thin sooner, If I understand correctly what you mean.
Hi Sebastian, marvelous work, absolutely love all the letterforms, no one mentioned but the s is really nice also, amazing B-h ligature, what can i say, masterpiece; i think you should give Dave's suggestion a try though :)
Yea I thought the 'r' was perfect, it really solves any issues with the gap underneath. I don't mind the 'u' at all, I like how that beginning stroke on the second stem mirrors the little tail at the bottom. I think it might look strange without it since none of the other verticals have a simple straight top.. If you want to try something different though, having it do something like the top of the 'a' or 't' stems could work, although it might clash with the first stem too much..
I've heard of it but never tried RoboFont (just FontLab and a good couple of years ago, Fontographer). You?
@Sebastian Boros hahaha sunt american dar pot sa vorbesc un pic, pc am avut o prietena romanica. that is most likely not all correct, but I havent spoken it in awhile.
@Claire, thank you, great suggestions! A concave finishing on the second stem of the u to resemble the top of the a can be a good idea. But I also think a flat top would be like an upside-down h so might work as well: http://oi39.tinypic.com/34q8wn4,jpg
No, I haven't tried RoboFont just yet, but I've heard words of praise about it. I don't know if the vector editing is any different to FontLab, but I'll give a go with the trial version soon.
@Neil: e destul de corect! You could easily pass as a Romanian lettering artist :)
Sorry I'm a little late replying – those two alternates for the 'u' are both really good. I think I'm leaning towards the middle one as the concave top mirrors the curve of the little tail at the bottom of the stem. The flat horizontal works much better than I would have imagined though.
Let me know what you think of RoboFont when you try it out!
