@Brian Feister some simple emboss / shadow layer effects, air brushing some high and low lights, and a lot of time tweaking the details like the cuts with brushes and selection tools.

Looks amazing! The only thing that bugs me is when you carve away the bark the lighter wood shows. Also with a different pattern from the bark.
