Took the feedback and put it to good use:
• Trying it without the tail (yay/nay)
• Added more magenta to the inner "globe"
• Brightened the grey ring to make it cooler and more aluminum-ish
Did I loose the feel of the original?
I'll probably keep both versions and release them later today. It's also been dock tested and mother approved.

I actually really admired the color of the purplish metal in the original and while this seems to fit with other Apple icons (Safari, Quicktime), I loved the chat bubble tail immensely and I still think it fits their vibe, see here.
[EDIT] I actually take my comment back from above. The tail VERY much fits Apple. The Quicktime has the line jutting out from the "Q" and the Safari icon has the ring jutting out from the top. I absolutely feel the previous was better.
My vote stays with the previous.

In some way I liked the previous more. I loved how the bubble referred to the new Ping.

I liked the tail and outer ring from the original better. I also agree with Rogie, it fits the Apple schemes.
