Pagination is ugly 99% of the time. I am so tired of navigating pages, but I still want the ability to do it. I discovered the problem is that nobody seems to have a "natural" feeling page navigation system. No numbers are needed and all the functionality exists. It does what you think it does. I really hope it just works.
It looks cool, but there is a difference between looking good and being functional. Functionality always trumps looks. The problems I can see with this abstract type of pagination is that the user doesn't immediately know what page they are on. This style also only works for small numbers like no more than 5-7 pages.
Designers are notorious for getting too caught up in the look of things and lose sight of the real objective. I don't see pagination ever going away from displaying just numbers. They are absolute and there is nothing to question about it.
PSD Tuts has pretty great pagination, it has solid rollovers that aren't hard to click on and you immediately know what page you are on relative to the surrounding pages.

I'm sitting on the fence here. While I understand what Johnny is saying and think he has a valid point, the numbers are not going to be relevant as more content is added to the site. What's on page 3 today may not be there next week.
Pagination in blogs, journals and news sites are really only relevant in the present. I like the idea Brandon executed and think it can provide a less confusing experience if you are just casually using the site.
Maybe a modified solution where hovering over a dot would display the page number. Making the number available if they need to know it.

Pagination can be cool (and functional)
by Brandon Davenport
I designed a new Pagination system (see rebound), and I got some neat feedback. Heres what I got so far, and I think its great the way it is.
What your seeing is the Hover state of the page dots, which pops up the page number. Further feedback appreciated!
