Honestly I never tried using a smart object for a shadow before.

At first I was always rasterizing the shadow so I can distort it and to give me more freedom. But I usually have to resize things in the end. I mean, a rasterized shadow can be scaled up a bit without loosing much quality since its blurry. But it's a nice feeling to have every layer resizable (:
