I need some real constructive criticism on this. It's an early draft, but for as much time as I put into it I hoped I'd be alot further along. I spent some time working with gradient mesh, but I couldn't get what I wanted out of it.
I'm really not feeling what I have here, but I don't know if it's just because I had something else in mind. I think it really starts to break down at smaller sizes too.
My first thought was "team". I've done this a lot where everyone puts their hand in the middle and then calls something out as they all raise their hands in the air together. Obviously, what people see is going to be effected by their culture and their experiences.
That being said I think it's too literal. If you want it to be an icon or a logo, something that gives people the feeling you want them to have maybe thinking about going more symbolic (if that makes sense). Invoke the feeling with an idea rather then literally showing them some hands all stacked together that are a wee-bit creepy because there's no body attached to them :)
I agree, this is saying teamwork to me. Maybe a hand being held out to suggest they need help? Pretty much like sketch 2nd box down in the RHS column. :)
I think if there a shape encapsulating it all, so that you get the impression you're looking at a circle-cropped "photo" that would help. Right now, the arms feel like they're kind of floating.
The smaller version in the shot, where there's a radial obscuring the hard cutoff at the end of the forearm, feels more cohesive and icon-lish to me.
@Melissa, where that's the challenge. I'm need to come up with two icons - one to represent being an individual giver, where you fund the child's surgery all by your lonesone. AND one that represents where you sign up to give monthly and collectively with other donors fund surgeries monthly. SO I need to represent that teamwork aspect.
The one for just Give (which reps the individual giving action) is going to be two hands shaking. @Mitchell I tried the one hand out idea, but that seemed to convey "ask" more than "give".
@Nathan, I also tried it on a tab but I didn't like it - maybe just because it was square though.

What do you think?? Please be blunt. :-)

Incoming blunt-ness...
First thought: Looks like a "competition" where the top-hand wins. In which case, makes me wonder thy that hand is white.
Second thought: What happened to the rest of the mannequins?

So the question I'm really struggling with is whether it's just my execution, or if I need to rethink the concept.

Just a thought here. Might reproduce well at very small sizes too.
Excuse the choppy masking :)
