So as part of the next Dunk update i'm making some UI revisions ahead of the coming portrait mode (yeah, you heard it here first lol).

I've been toying with some new icons and i figured you guys would be the best crowd to ask. What you see here is the old set (above) and my new take (below).

I feel it should be said that the style choice for the original set was founded in the idea that the icons shouldn't call too much attention to themselves which gave them this minimal look. However, i couldn't get this idea of a slightly more detailed set of icons out of my head.

On one hand the minimal look is anonymous and serviceable, they keep out of your way and get the job done. The tradeoff with these new, more detailed, icons is more visual noise in the design but they also add another level of polish and identity to the app.

    A classic conundrum, really.

So what do you think? Do you like the new icons better? What is your feelings towards clean vs detailed approaches?

I really dig them, I think it gives the app the personality it needs. I wouldn't be too worried about switching them up.

I prefer the old ones. As you said, the new ones add too much visual noise.

At first glance, it's way easier to understand the old icons, the new ones are too confusing.

Or maybe the new ones don't stand out as much as the old ones because they're on a dark background...

I really don't like these… the old ones were better. These are incredibly dull and boring, and the glow behind the items is very odd.

I agree that the old ones are more polished looking, and less visual distraction. Now the user can enjoy the shot.

I prefer the originals too. Although i quite like the edges of the new 'buttons' or whatever they are that hold the icons.

These new ones aren't ugly, but will definitely serve as a visual distraction. Kind of where Windows went wrong and us Mac users didn't. :p I LOVE YOU, THOUGH.

I use Dunk a lot. It's fantastic, and you've done a great job boiling it down to the essentials and getting rid of clutter. I think these new icons, nice as they are, could just be a bit distracting.

Old ones definitely. But seriously get rid of the half pixels on the twitter icon. And whatever the hell this is on the bottom of the top line. http://cl.ly/2CZP

Damn that's quite a conundrum, detailed ones look reli good it gives the nice warm feel, but, the mono ones are there to make the artworks or shot stand out more.
I dunno u can always add color to the old ones if u want some kind of change, and keep these new ones for future projects and such?
In the end just call it a vote with these comments and other chat's etc.
IMO id go with the old ones with color.

I like the details of the new ones, but not the color or the glow. So how about making a monochrome version of the second set? I also feel like the pictograms should be slightly smaller so there's more breathing room inside the frame.

Why not provide 2 skins and let the user decide?

I really like the new icons. Personally I use Dunk everyday and in the current version, the icons don't appear at the same time as the shot. They only appear when you want to see them by touching the lower side of the screen. For this reason I don't think they will be distracting. Having said that I think the old icons match the overall look of the app better. Also really looking forward to the new portrait mode.

Also, looking at these again I noticed there's some centring issues on the top icons, especially the first three :)

The news icons are cool but the old ones are way more appropriate.

    +1 for the old ones!

+1 for the old ones. WIth an app like dunk, where each piece of "content" is so colorful, I think full color icons compete. The current ones you have are spot on perfect.
